Checkin' in

So, here it is, December 10th, and here I am writing my first entry of the month. Wow, am I ever not diligent at this, eh?

It's not that nothing's been happening. Plenty has been doing on in the world for the average Canadian cience geek to blog about....our Parliament being completely ineffectual and refusing to play nicely so they can sort our proverbial shit out....the economy tanking and approximately 300 or so of my neighbours losing their jobs at a local plant along with a dozen or so of my former coworkers losing their jobs (cushy gov't jobs...the kind that are supposed to last forever). Yep, plenty to blog about.

My personal life has been equally bloggable. I am back on prac, so I've been teaching Biology for the last two and a half weeks. I started teaching Chemistry on Monday. I initiated my "action research" project. It's an exploration of formative assessment as a tool to guage students' confidence in their own abilities. Fun stuff, I know. I also had my first less than positive experience as a teacher on Friday when I student boldly lied to my face. Also fun stuff.

Capt Mike is away on a course in Ottawa, so it's just me and the puppies. So far things are going pretty smoothly, though I will admit I was a little concerned it wouldn't. Zeppelin ripped one of his claws out on Saturday during our daily run in the woods. We've been keeping it clean and had been bandaging it, but it turns out bandaging a young hound's paw is really a two-person job. The first day flying solo I cheated and used a sock instead of the gauze wrap. That afternoon I called the vet to find out if what we'd been doing was alright, and she assured me that it was okay to just leave the wound open to the air, as long as we keep it clean. So Zeppelin has been getting twice-daily foot bathes in a mixture of saline and H2O2 (he has to be pinned against a wall in a closed room to stand still long enough for it to be at all effective) and isn't going to go back to the dog park until I can see some nail forming again. A nailbed infection is not something I want to deal with, even when Mike and I can tag team it.

So, without the dog park, we've had to make do with the back yard (very snowy) and walks around the neighbourhood (very slippery). I think Dexter is a little annoyed by that. I feel bad for him, but I can't take him somewhere and not take Zeppelin. They have bonded so closely in the last few months, that they both get pretty distraught when they're separated from one another.

So, as you can see, life has been busy. Busy in a way that is not necessarily conducive to blogging, but enjoyable nonetheless. I'm sure I'll have plenty more time to catch up on this aspect of my life over the holidays... ;-)
